C Företaget is an interesting Swedish socio-economic invention launched by a non-profit association of enthusiasts. It is launched as a serious company with a accountability among business development organisations.

"C Företaget" literally means "the C Company” and offers an administrative platform for people who want to run a business without starting a formal company of their own. Instead, they create their future as employees of C Företaget. C Företaget thus lies in the borderland between normal businesses and the security of traditional employment: formally an emplyee in C Företaget is legally employed, but she/he is expected to take full responsibility for her/his own business and act as an entrepreneur.

This new way of entreprenuership does not start with only a business idea, it demands a real customer. Someone wants to buy the service and/or product provided, and this requires legal registration and a permission by the tax authority – “a license to bill”. C Företaget has already got those qualifications as a joint-stock company and includes new business opportunities by employing "sellers/producers” for a service fee. But first, we will have to come to terms with our specific roles by signing a “Memorandum of Understanding” where the employees in C Företaget promise to take full responsibility when it comes to economy and ethics and so on. We, on the part of the C Företaget, promise to handle the administration responsibly and correctly and follow all kinds of legislation. For this, we charge a percentage of the sales and an administration fee. So in a way, our employees actually rent us as their employer.

Every employee in C Företaget gets a separate account in the bookkeeping where all transactions are made and business operations can be monitored at all times. All fieldwork is performed by the employed entrepreneur, but when it comes to invoicing, C Företaget takes over. We manage the flow of money such as invoicing, payments, wages, costs, payroll taxes, VAT and contacts with authorities. Expenses are of course reimbursed – as long as the employee/company user has got enough money in his/her account. The same applies to investments and the purchase of material - nothing can be ordered until the money is in the bookkeeping account. C Företaget has no room for credit or banking, every employee is a self governed business within the company.

The success of this concept in Sweden is amazing. In a few years, the concept has grown to more than 250 employees spread all over the country. It started as a “practical way of evaluating the idea” on a local basis – in Värmland county where they prefer to do things first and analyse afterwards! The news spread rapidly and the concept is now a phenomenon on the national level of socio-economics. Part of this success is its simplicity - a phone call and a signing of agreement is all that is needed to launch a new business. The concept suits all kinds of people too, unemployed as well as senior consultants and people who want to market their competence after their "ordinary" job.
